This ancient remedy dates back to ancient Egypt and Ancient China, royalty would collect sand, minerals, and plants to exfoliate their skin and remove any dead layers. Some of these natural resources are a primary source of our products, such as the Pumice Stone which the Queen of Egypt would use. I mean, if we could all look like Cleopatra, why shouldn’t we!
As time went on, unfortunately, microbeads were introduced to exfoliation for skincare. These microbeads are tiny, round plastics beads that caused a stir due to its humungous plastic waste that was found damaging ecosystems and killing marine life. Not only are they bad for our Earth, but they are also not beneficial for skin and weren’t as good as the natural exfoliants. Why need to fix something that never was, and never will be broken?
Instead of using plastic waste onto our skin, let’s ground our seeds, crush our peach stone pits and our walnut husks, soak our oats, reuse our coffee grinds, or straight salt or sugar. This is what nature has provided for our exfoliating needs.
Now through 18 years of experimenting and giving away products for different skin concerns, I have found that exfoliating has aided in many skin problems from rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, dry skin, anti-aging, and acne-prone skin.
The first thing I discovered it helped with was blemish-prone skin. Before exfoliating, dead skin seals your pores, so when sebaceous glands produce oil, it’s stuck under the dry skin causing breakouts as the oil has nowhere to go. After exfoliating, it effectively unclogs pores which is great prevention for whiteheads and blackheads. Stopping those blemishes to rise before you even realise they are there!
Not only is it good for oily skin it’s very beneficial for dry skin as it destroys those little stuck particles, soothes, and softens by buffing away. Creating an even complexion to begin adding your serums and moisturiser.
Scrubbing your skin also helps other skincare products penetrate deeper, which is extremely advantageous for all skin types when letting your moisturiser soak in further for greater hydration. It also begins smoothing the overall texture making the skin feel and look more uniform over time which has proven great for hyperpigmentation, rough skin, dark spots, and acne scars.
It’s less heard benefits are that it increases cell turnover and collagen synthesis which is offering a ton of anti-aging benefits such as prevention and elimination of wrinkles and promotes plumping. That after scrub glow is something I look forward to every week!
Something that I believe is undervalued with scrubbing is its incredible benefits to general health and wellbeing. It internally cleanses you by increasing lymphatic drainage as you massage your face which is extremely detoxing and aids in removing unhealthy debris. This is also the same effect when you scrub your whole body!
Now scrubs come in many shapes and forms, but one that I was drawn to 18 years ago was the Pumice Stone. This so-called “ordinary” and underrated stone that was used mainly in the media to scrub your feet, had the potential for skin greatness!
Pumice is formed when a volcano erupts and the lava stops moving, it solidifies to form some igneous rocks. This rock mixes with water and the Pumice Stone is made. Such a powerful and strong background story for our “ordinary” feet scrubber.
At Sunwellbeing we use finely ground Pumice Stone and add it into our natural soap blend to create the ultimate hydrating & healing exfoliant. We accompany it with nourishing organic shea butter, olive oil, aloe vera gel, and essential oils.
These ingredients combined make a unique blend that exfoliates, cleanses, and nourishes the skin – a perfect recipe that has incredible results for radiance.
